Today we were privileged to welcome the Rev. Dr. Jeremy Treat to chapel. Our chapel theme for this semester is “Seek First the Kingdom of God,” which comes from Matthew 6:33, and is the topic of Dr. Treat’s book. We were also able to give a copy of this life-changing book to each student at Taylor.
Dr. Treat spoke to us about “The Anxious Generation” and the significance the Kingdom of God has to help us not to be anxious. He called us to get rid of distractions, so we are able to seek first the kingdom. He emphasized to us that following the kingdom does not mean we neglect all the earthly things, but that seeking the kingdom will lead us to put those things into perspective, where we think about those things less because they are less significant than the eternal significance of the kingdom of God. He called us to seek first because every action we take will then be filled with meaning. Dr. Treat called us to acknowledge that the Kingdom has already come, that it is not a utopia off in the distance, but that because Jesus is the embodiment of the kingdom, the kingdom came when Jesus did. In concluding his message, Dr. Treat offered a call to action: “It’s time for this generation to rise up and be a kingdom generation that lives for the glory of God.” Our hope is the same. We pray for a radical change to be executed through this generation for the glory of God.
